Set in New York in 1991 and starring Melissa McCarthy and
Richard E. Grant, this film ticks most boxes for the discerning viewer: dark humour, an unlikely friendship, an original and
intriguing story and, perhaps most vividly, “a visceral depiction of loneliness” (Emily Yoshida, Vulture). It tells the true story of Lee Israel, a failing writer, who schemed to forge letters by famous writers and sell them, ultimately with devastating consequences. McCarthy and Grant were nominated for Academy Awards, it was given a 98% approval rating by film review site Rotten Tomatoes and also won a place in the National Board of Review’s Top Ten films of 2018.
